Why dream about your best smile, when you can achieve it?

sleep-apnea-side-effectsObstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is often ignored, misunderstood and undiagnosed. Yet, for thousands of Americans, it’s the root cause of other common illnesses, fatalities, life difficulties and financial costs.

An Intro to OSA

Here’s a quick video from DNews to introduce you to the topic of OSA…

Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on Our Roads

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 100,000 accidents reported to the police are the result of drowsy driving. This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in losses. It is likely that more than this goes unreported, since it is difficult to know what actually happened at some accident scenes.

In addition, 60% of auto drivers admit drowsy driving, and a 37% report falling asleep at the wheel. Adults between the ages of 18-29 are much more likely to drive while drowsy.

While we do not know exactly how mava of these accidents are the result of OSA-related fatigue, we can say that this is a substantial problem. Here’s a video put out by the NHTSA warning of the dangers…

The Effects on Children

In a longitudinal study conducted at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and published in the April 2012 issue of Pediatrics, it was reported that signs of sleep-disordered breathing in children, ages 6 to 69 months, predicted a 60% higher risk of behavioral problems, such as hyperactivity, at age 7.

Children with the worst symptoms that persisted the longest were most likely to develop hyperactivity, conduct, and social problems. Read the summary in MEDPAGE TODAY.
